A simple game of chance, baccarat involves betting on which hand – the Player’s or the Banker’s — will have a total closest to 9. In addition, bettors may also wager that a third party (a non-player) will win. Each hand is dealt a set of three cards and the winning hand is determined by the total value when the pips (the dots on the face of each card, representing clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades) are added up.
While there are many variations of the game, baccarat is typically played with seven to 14 players, and each has a separate area for betting. Bettors place their bets in advance, and each round consists of two hands of cards. The first hand is called the ‘Player’s hand’, and the second is called the ‘Banker’s hand’. Each hand is scored by a croupier or banker who wears a white glove and deals the cards. A winning Player’s hand pays out 1:1 unless it is a “Ponto” (Player wins by a nine-point total). If the Banker’s hand wins, the bet pays out 9:1 minus a 5% commission.
